Reflecting on our trip I feel like I had a better understanding of this part of the world, which was a key goal behind it. It wasn’t relaxing for most of it, but if it was, I don’t think it would have been interesting. We were confused a few times, but were always safe. It was good to have the trip within a few years of Vietnam. Vietnam is growing so much and had a different energy, but similar threads. I think we won’t do South East Asia for a while again. People say there is more in other parts Thailand and I haven’t done Malaysia, Indonesia or the Philippines at all for example, but time (and annual leave – despite what Caitlin believes) is finite and there are other parts of the world I would like to see first.

I had a short flight to Singapore, then a 9 hour layover followed by a 2am flight that gets into Sydney at midday Sunday. I half expect to not be able to sleep on this and crash hard tomorrow. But it was definitely cost effective. Thankfully, as Claude (the “AI” we use) emphatically noted, “Changi airport is genuinely the best airport in the world to be stuck in”. I filled my 9 hours with the following and more (some things that happen in Changi, stay in Changi):

Walk from one end to the other (maybe 1 hour from T1 to T3 and 30 mins back as less pottering)

Butterfly garden (5 mins – chrysalid cell in the middle with all the pupae was the best part)

Cactus garden (5 mins – doubled as smoking area. It felt weird to be allowed to under open sky without going through customs)

Free movie cinema (Frozen 2 from start to finish – 2/7, watchable in the background while writing this post, you don’t need to see the first for this one)

Tech shop game console demo (Donkey Kong on Switch 2 was fun, Warthunder on PS5 is borderline unplayable though and should be PC only)

Magazine/bookshops (even the Changi airport magazine selection sucks, that is how you know the industry is dead)

Got dumpling noodle and big pau. He reads signs at museums twice as fast as me so he can give me the highlights while hurrying me along. He likes to watch YouTube videos on our afternoon breaks. I miss him.

Laos has not been fun. Its main feature is that it is poor. Very poor. No one we’ve met has travelled outside of Laos. Bookshops and cinemas are rare. Everyone has a phone but they can’t afford the train that their own country couldn’t afford to build. Shops are empty of customers but have ten staff waiting, spread out in each corner, probably all highschool students paying for their board in the city. I thought there would be crime and scams a plenty but really every Laotian is too busy doing their own thing, trying to make their own day a little bit better.

There’s nothing luxurious in Laos. Very little is maintained. The roads even just minutes out of the city are atrocious.

I wanted to come here because when we were in Vietnam we did a tourist experience where you overnight in a cave after hiking in. One of the ‘safety guides’ (porters that can’t speak English) was introduced to us as Jerry by one of the ‘tour guides’ (fluent English). Later on we were told that Jerry is from Laos and is recovering from being an illegal logger. I was used to people coming from Vietnam to Australia to have a better life. What was this country where people leave to go to Vietnam for a better life?

And that’s Laos. There’s rampant inflation such that you’re a millionaire in Kip the moment you enter the country. There’s no expat community – there is little business to speak of. It’s hot. It’s a bit hopeless. A famous (at least in travelogues) fact about Laos during the Vietnam War: a planeload of bombs was dropped every 8 minutes, for 9 years. A second famous fact: 30% of these don’t detonate. So they are a huge risk to villagers in all aspects of life: farming, gardening, building houses, outdoor fires – pretty much anything that involves disturbing the ground.
