This day (my final full day in Thailand) only gets a blog post out of adherence to the daily format.
90% of my time is at the hotel room, venturing out only briefly for meals. A 10minute walk to lunch in the sun quickly exhausts me and I retreat back to the air-conditioned hotel room. I expect to read a lot today but my eyes are sore so I mostly play on my phone and text Declan. I rediscover not having an Instagram account is really annoying when you want to watch little comedy videos, as I constantly have to reload the page when I am prompted to log in. Amazing to think that two years ago having COVID in Thailand would have been terrifying. I am just tired and sore.
I don’t feel as though I have seen, tasted or learnt much about Southern Thailand.
My view for nearly the entire day. Southern Thailand is increasingly Muslim, as the country shares a boarder with Malaysia. There are very few Buddah images and more hijabs and mosques.Don’t pat, has rabies. Don’t pat, has rabies. After the crazy Australian in my new group also expresses fascination for the powerlines, I distance myself from them. However, in a sick fugue, I succumb to old habits. I wonder how many people request the finer details on the insurance option.Roti very common here. As per local customs, is labelled “Thai pancake” in Krabi. At a small collection of food stands away from the beach, two Thai vendors who have their stands next to each other say something in Thai and laugh at me. This is more like it.
I order an egg roti for dinner in a nod to savoury. I didn’t realise it also is covered in condensed milk – this is now dessert. I therefore also order a papya salad, using the Thai word for “one”. Despite that this is the most primative use of the Thai language possible (and I am also holding up one finger), I am proud when the cook asks me something back in Thai. But my baffled look back causes her to raise a chili and laugh again at me. I indicate ‘yes, I would like chili’ but when I get my meal she has vetoed my input and given me no chili. Not my copy but brings back fond memories. This is my copy. I didn’t enjoy as much as I had hoped. It was staff recommended at Better Read Than Dead in Newtown, which has previously worked well for me. It is non fiction and the blurb paints this as a recollection of a friendship between two uni friends, one of whom is murdered before graduating. That is indeed an aspect of the book. But there are longer passages on the author’s involvement with college racial politics and his interest in music. I am not interested in these latter aspects, and the fragmented style didn’t help in these sections either. If the author focussed only on the friendship then it could have been a remarkable long essay in the New Yorker. Also this paper back cost $38…
Impressed at your commitment to the blog Cait you still manage to find something interesting to write about. I took a little life to book club and no one had heard of it. What are you doing with your books when you finish them? Hope you set aside an extra pile for Declan to bring over 😉 and I hope tomorrow sees you being allowed some extra chilli love M xx
Do you feel like you are slowly getting better
We went to see Greg at aanuka on Friday night.
After being there for over an hour his wife pipes up and says that she did a Covid test that day and not to worry she only has a cold and not covid.
Mum had been sitting right next to her and I was also close.
48 hours later I start coughing.
Had a crappy sleep and woke up with a bad cough and a sore throat.
I was supposed to run my last meeting for the year this morning but mum is going to have to do it.
Just got over a bad back which lasted 3 weeks and I have managed to go straight into a chest cold.
Will test for Covid later today.
Anyway still enjoyed your post and hope this was just some annoying downtime before you enjoy the rest of your travels.
I have been giving them away. The first book I read was Green Dot and I gave that to the American lady on the first tour who was holidaying next in Australia. It’s an Australian book, wasn’t great, but she said she was currently reading “fantasy smut” so figured it can’t be that much of a step down. The second book, Stay True, I left in the book exchange at the hotel. If Declan brings me some more books over, it is a sign of true love.
Oh no!!! Maybe I made you sick from South East Asia dad? Am very sad to hear you are not well, that’s extremely annoying coming into Christmas. Was the wife obviously sick? Why would she come out the Aanuka dinner.. that’s surely one you can miss… Do you have to work today?
