Declan’s Den – Andamooka

Last modified date

This blog is officially popular enough for a guest post! My writing won’t be as delightful as Caitlin’s and it certainly won’t be as regular, but it will definitely be Declan.

My first guest post is from the town of Andamooka in outback SA. Why am I here? Good question, I’m not 100% sure. Andamooka is the nearest thing resembling a point of interest around, but that just moves the question back a level.

Andamooka is (or more likely, was) opal country. The town is surrounded by piles of dirt where prospectors have staked their claim and gone searching for their bounty. To noodle, is to search for opal and is the thing to do in town.

The town is down to around 300 residents, from 3000 in its prime. Must sees include the post office/opal museum, piles of dirt from everyone noodling, the old dugout homes built into the hills (that people lived in through until the 70s) and the parked up old heavy machinery on the way into town. The cafe is pretty good, the steak sandwich looked to be the pick with nicely buttery crisped bread and steak cooked just right.

It is this, but for basically hundreds of kilometres in every direction.
We did not drive on the salt lake. The sign was very clear.
My accomodation.
I can never go past a burger and a milkshake.
Noodling with the gang for opal.
My opal haul. I only really found the middle blue one. The other two were pointed out by the town café owner who was only too happy to take us on a short noodling expedition.
This wasn’t even the best one. Another grave had a welded Bigus Dickus sign on top of it. No context provided (or needed possibly).

  1. Is noodling your new favourite word/activity? Did you meet many locals or mainly the cafe owner?
This was a brilliant blog, and I am excited for the guest post to become more regular.

  2. Noodling is a silly word for a silly activity done by silly people. I use it every chance I get.
We met the cafe owner/amateur noodler and post office lady/opal museum curator. We missed out on Cal the stoner as all our noodling had pooped us out.

  3. For an interloper this was an excellent first post.

    Great photos.

If that building was in Sydney on a good size block of land it would go fit 4-5 m.

    Classic fixer upperer.

I wasn’t aware we had sponsored the blog. Caitlin can you send me a receipt so I can claim as advertising for a tax deduction.
