Tues 9th Jan – Hoi An -> Reunification Express

Last modified date

Big train day today, boarding at 2pm and arriving the next day at 8am. Declan booked a two bed berth, so it was just the two of us, with a door that shuts to the carriage corridor. Very comfortable although you can still hear the sounds of people outside of the berth.

Food drying on the footpaths is a nice quaint touch. I’m always worried about accidentally stepping on them though and getting in a lot of trouble. DW
Coffee in Hoi An killing time before the shuttle to the train station. Definitely a living room with table and chairs. CR.
Where these workers (presumably) on break crouch bare footed on chairs, cigarettes in hand, gambling at 9am. CR.
Declan makes some tough decisions about snacks at the Tourism Office in the train station before we leave. CR.
Our longest train trip (18 hours) from Hoi An to Saigon.
When the train goes through a level crossing, all of the bikes have to stop and wait. It is the only time I think they do. Although sometimes people are waiting between the boom gates, so I guess they got stuck? In the bigger cities you end up seeing hundreds of bikes stacked up waiting for you to go past and zoom back off. DW
Dinner served as the sun sets on rice paddies. The train attendant in our carriage appeared what couldn’t have been more than 10 minutes later and brusquely collected our plates, with more than half of our dinner remaining. I suppose we could have said we weren’t finished yet but she gestured with such force we were stunned into submission. CR.

  1. If you tip over the bowl of drying food you have to pay for all of it

When I got kaley an ice cream I saw a 5 or 6 year old kid drop all of an untouched ice cream out of his cup onto the ground. As his mum had just paid her week’s salary for the ice cream she quickly got the spoon and pushed the ice cream back into the cup and gave it back to her child. Everyone was happy.

Some people seem to be wearing long pants and jackets. What is the temperature like

Have you had problems with mozzies

The train compartment looks really nice.

I am such a slow eater. I would have to shoo away the lady collecting the plates.

Your train food looks good. Train food in aus is just rubbish stodge or stale sandwiches

  2. That is a great story about the kid and the ice cream. It’s worth the money alone to have that memory. Did the mum seem to have any qualms about doing the mop up job?

Yes I know what you mean about long pants and jackets. I think 100% are knock off active wear so they wouldn’t be providing warms like we imagine them to be. So maybe they are sun protection? It’s gets to a low of 24 overnight and a high of 34 in the day – there’s never any moment where warm clothing would be needed.

I have been bitten by quite a few mozzies but less than if I was in port Douglas. I guess the main issue is disease but I don’t know how to stop that… We’ve been taking Malaria preventative tablets while in Vietnam (mainly because we weren’t sure what to do about the jungle hike) but i don’t actually think malaria is a big concern. There’s stuff like dengue fever which is more endemic but has no vaccination. A bit of a hope for the best scenario.

Train food, while we didn’t get to finish, was really good. Had veggies, egg, rice, salted peanuts and some chicken. Food on xpt doesn’t even come close.

  3. The mum had no qualms about recycling the ice cream.

She had already overpaid and wasn’t going to buy another one. The kid was too young to know any better and was happy to eat his treat.

Maybe the long pants and jacket are also about minimising mozzie bites.

That is to hot for me. We are currently about 20 at night to low 30’s and very humid. Has been so uncomfortable that we have had the air conditioner on in our bedroom for the last two nights which we normally never do.

Do you have to give up your plates when they come around to collect them. I would still have so much food left to eat.

  4. We probably could have kept plates if we asked but the attendant was giving out vibes she wanted to only do this job once.
