Fri 13th Sep – Narrandera (Riverina) -> Taralga (Tablelands)

While it’s a travesty to leave the church Airbnb in the morning, we are comforted that we are going to a luxe country retreat tonight. And I am big on luxe country Airbnb life.

First item on the day checklist: get James breakfast. Pre-trip James reassured me he would be fine with weetbix for breakfast each day. That was a small hikers fib. Bacon and Egg rolls are breakfast of choice for James. CR.
Weetbix cannot compete with a B&E. Especially from the Early Opener cafe! The golden hue in the photo is not a filter. It was just that good. JRT
Fuelled and ready, we arrive at the Temora Aviation Museum. They have ~15 planes built between 1920’s to 1950’s. Dek is very excited, and strictly time-limited to 2 hours. JRT
We had the best tour guide. He knew so much about aviation and made sure the group was comfortable. He farted around a bit but overall we had a really fun time and learnt lots. Five cylinders out of five. CR.
Dek has lots of awesome facts. For anyone who doesn’t know about jet engines, everyone in the industry talks about the sequence: Suck Squeeze Bang Blow. What do they really do at Boeing? JRT
The spitfire with the teeth was James’ favourite plane at the Temora museum. DW.
They made 20,000+ of these planes in World War 2 because of how cool they looked. JRT
There was very little to do in Young. We barely got out of the car to see the Big Cherry. The locals seemed to agree – we saw several drug deals during our 10 mins driving through. JRT
The green is striking after being in the desert. We are getting close to home. JRT
The afternoon coffee run has a high potential to turn into a fried food affair when James is involved. Here he just saw burgers come out that other people had ordered. A few minutes later a bag of nuggets arrived on our table. DW.
Coffees and 6 nuggets? Big yes. JRT
Cait is gate and food SME. She is excellent at both. I offered to open a gate once and was told I’m not qualified. JRT
I thought the church Airbnb couldn’t be matched, but it has been. We are staying in a beautiful country homestead, complete with cows, horses, and.. wombats!! You can almost hear Caitlin’s excitement through the photo. JRT
Tonight is fire focussed. It starts with a big outdoor fire, smores, and warm butts. JRT
James continues to redeem himself as Chief Fire Officer with his second fire of the night. DW.
Dek secretly tells me he appreciates my fire making skills. With a boost of confidence, we make another big fire to compensate for the broken heating system in the house. JRT

  1. Congratulations on your generous B +E review James. They should use that photo for their ads!

Glad to see years of uni paid off for Caitlin’s expert area to be gates . I can only imagine how excited you were to see that wombat Cait. He’s a big’un!!!!

What was Declans favourite plane?? Was 2 hours enough?

Can we have a blog addendum with some pics of the luxe country retreat?? The outdoor fire setup was so good. I know someone who will have woodpile envy!

  2. The wombat was a huge highlight!! Hard to believe, but this is my first wombat encounter in the wild. Apparently there’s lots in the Megalong Valley, but sadly they don’t make it up the mountains. I wish we had echidnas and wombats in the Blue Mountains.

Declan liked the Boomerang plane the most. It’s a silly, stubby looking plane. But all three of us agreed they didn’t really have any of the cool planes (that are more modern).

Some more photos of luxe country retreat will be in the final post. It was a beautiful location but unfortunately the beds weren’t that comfy and they didn’t have a good couch, so the church wins best accommodation of the trip. I did love waking up to cows mooing across paddocks though.
