Thu 17th April – Sydney to Tokyo (Haneda)
Welcome back to the blog! We hope the Roberts-Thompsons still have us bookmarked.
It was a weird day at work. It is emotionally difficult to reconcile the routine nature of employment with the knowledge you will be waking up several thousand miles away tomorrow morning. Let’s see how we manage.
Despite a minor mix-up at the start (Caitlin had assumed I would meet here at arrivals as I was “arriving” at the airport), we progressed through the motions and managed to clear customs, security, the luxury sunglasses district and board our plane.
Things that captivate me at the airport:
- Seeing pilots walking around. International ones in particular always seem sort of lost and confused, holding a coffee and speaking into a phone in the middle of a hall.
- People who feel some primal survival urge to load up on bottled water. This must be some reaction to having to surrender your liquids to security.

Boeing 787? Smoooooth
CR bonus content: I was not present for this blog post as I was working on my flying fear reduction methods: valium, eye mask, ear plugs and counting to 100 repeatedly, with small breaks for a mental mantra “most planes land”.
In other words, I am a delight to fly with.
Thanks for getting the blog back online. I picture is worth a thousand words and the first photo of Caitlin could be a novel.
Love that this is back!! Can’t wait to read the rest of the posts (doing a bit of a binge hehe). And love the comment about the expensive eyewear – does anyone actually buy from these stores? How do the stores make their rent? Why eyewear? Many questions to ponder…
