The first leg of the journey to Flinder’s Ranges was filled with delightful interludes. This was also the day I didn’t spend my whole bonus on oilskins and cowhides.
This part of the drive is filled with seemingly endless possibilities: astronomy, $5 movie tickets, long lunches, fires, sleep. You can’t have it all in one day and some options got left in the dust. This is a luxury we won’t have the next day as we traverse the Hay Plain which has one option: nothing.
We camp tonight but why ruin a perfectly pleasant post with the details.
Caitlin excelled at making a breakfast feast, so she got to pick the first CD for the drive. It was rock classics. Good pick Cait. DW. This decision was not made under duress. CR.Adventure calls. When will we return next? Sooner than you may expect. CR.Guess who realised they forgot their wallet five minutes into the trip. At least she realised before we arrived at the lolly shop… DW. Thankfully Barry and Soumya hadn’t realised we had already tried to leave and therefore weren’t aware of my humiliation running back up to the house. CR.I am flush with cash again having secured my wallet but I struggle to keep the men focused on the trip. CR.James settles into a new country image. CR. Born in the city, heart in the country. JRT.Lucknow was the home of gold (old mine shaft visible in photo) and a sick shop selling heaps of country gear. I applaud Caitlin for her restraint in not buying a deer skull and cow skin. DWThe leader of the trip shows his climbing prowess, which made up for his subpar navigation. Luckily we had time to spare. JRT.A familiar view for the day. The green will soon give way to red. JRT.Canola fields in bloom. This is significantly prettier than the prior town of Wellington. Wellington seems to have shut itself down but forgot to tell its residents. CR.Casualties of the road trip. RIP. CR.A finely established campsite. DW. 3 degrees outside, but a balmy 18 in the swag. JRT. 3 degrees outside, 3 degrees inside the blue tent. CR.If you look carefully you can see James’ safety glasses that he wasn’t allowed to cut logs without. I need James to keep his eyes or I will have to do all the driving myself. DW. A colossal waste of money, but de-railing the trip over a $5 pair of safety glasses wasn’t worth it. JRT. A very expensive but very enjoyable fire. Seasoned firefighter Dek relaxed his concerns after getting toasty. JRT. Declan peeing on the fire to put it out when we go to bed reminds me of the power of man. CR. This was actually official RFS procedure and should not be attempted by anyone without extensive training and a massive hog. DW
I should make a testosterone related comment about the activities of the men on the trip but I am still laughing about Caitlin forgetting her wallet. When was her first toilet stop? Memories <3
Really looking forward to the rest of the blog. Hello James 👋
I think we have yet to have an actual toilet stop… Everyone is a bit blocked up from too many chips! I’m nervous (and often in trouble for farting in the car).
I agree with the comment about needing safety glasses. Caitlin looks like she is dressed for Siberia around the fire. I’m confused about the expensive fire comment. I’m not really going for the tent situation. What was the toilet situation at this site.
I was very cold at night around the fire, but far colder in our non-Winter grade tent. The expensive fire was because we had to go to Bunnings to get firewood, an axe and safety glasses, which all up cost about $50.
